Dentures are replacements for missing teeth that can be removed and replaced in the mouth at will. Depending on the individual patient’s case, full or partial dentures may be obtained. All natural teeth are removed from the mouth and replaced with full teeth. There are two types of complete dentures.
- Conventional full dentures – This is when all of the teeth are removed and the gums are given time to heal before the denture is placed. It can take months for the gums to fully heal, and you are toothless during this time.
- Immediate Full Dentures – Prior to having your teeth removed, your Toronto Dentist takes measurements and has dentures fitted for your mouth. Once your teeth are extracted, the denture is immediately placed in your mouth. The benefit is that you do not have to spend any time without teeth. However, you will need follow-up visits to get your dentures back because they will slightly change the shape of the jawbone at the heel of your mouth. When the jawbone heals, the tooth will need to be tightened.
Partial dentures are another option when you do not need to remove all of your teeth. This looks like a bridge, but it’s not a permanent object in front of you.
Getting used to your dentures could take some time. The flesh-colored base of the denture is placed on your teeth. Some people say it feels too big or nowhere near enough room for their tongue. Other times, the dentures would become loose again. These emotions will affect how you eat and speak quite a bit. Over time, your mouth is trained to eat and talk to your dentures and begins to feel more like your natural teeth. They never feel exactly comfortable, but it’s better than the alternative of being toothless.
Even if your teeth are not real teeth, you need to take good care of them. Before removing your dental teeth, brush them to remove plaque and food particles. Once removed, it should be placed directly into room-temperature water or toothpaste. Never use hot water as it can distort the toothpaste. Your teeth are delicate, so they don’t shed your teeth. Also never try to change the dentures yourself. You can damage them, so you should always seek help from a dentist if they feel uncomfortable or loose.
